How to Calculate Your Bead Reductions

April 3, 2026··
Bead counting is a practical and flexible way to taper medications that come in capsule form with small beads or pellets inside. This method allows for gradual, controlled reductions tailored to your individual tolerance. This guide will walk you step-by-step through how to calculate your bead reductions in a clear and manageable way. Step 1: Open the Capsule and Count the Beads Carefully open one capsule and count how many beads are inside. • Do this over a clean, flat surface • Use a small dish or tray to keep beads from rolling away or use a dark t-shirt • Count slowly and carefully 💡 Tip: Count a few capsules and take an average, since the number of beads can vary slightly from capsule to capsule. 👉 Example: You count 3 capsules and get: 98, 102, and 100 beads Your average = 100 beads per capsule Step 2: Choose Your Reduction Percentage Decide how much you want to reduce your dose. Common approaches include: • 10% reductions (standard starting point for many) • 5% reductions (more conservative) • Smaller reductions (for sensitive individuals) 💡 There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Go at a pace your nervous system can tolerate. Step 3: Calculate How Many Beads to Remove Now you’ll calculate your reduction amount. • Take your total bead count • Multiply it by your chosen reduction percentage This tells you how many beads to remove 👉 Example: 100 beads × 10% = 10 beads to remove Step 4: Determine Your New Daily Dose Next, figure out how many beads you will take each day. • Subtract the number of beads you are removing from your total 👉 Example: 100 total beads − 10 removed = 90 beads to take daily 💡 IMPORTANT: From this point forward, your daily routine is to count the number of beads you are taking—not the number you removed. Step 5: Prepare Your Daily Dose Each day: • Open your capsule • Count out your target number of beads (your new dose) • Place them back into an empty capsule or take them as directed Tips for Success • ✔️ Be consistent – Try to take your dose at the same time each day • ✔️ Keep a log – Track your bead counts and how you feel • ✔️ Use good lighting – This makes counting much easier • ✔️ Work slowly and calmly – Rushing increases errors • ✔️ Prepare doses ahead of time (optional) – Some people prepare a week's worth at a time Important Considerations Bead Size Variability Beads may not all be exactly the same size or weight. • For most people, these differences average out over time • At very low doses, some may choose to be more precise Final Thoughts Bead counting puts you in control of your taper. Go slowly, stay flexible, and adjust as needed. Over time, small, consistent reductions can lead to meaningful progress while minimizing unnecessary stress on your system.

Overall, this is a really helpful, solid how-to guide for bead counting during a taper. I especially like it's emphasis on individual variability and pacing, and removing any time constraint. The "Tips" and "Considerations" sections are clear and helpful. Just a few things, but nothing major. Some Effexor taperers may wonder about bead size differences and whether or not that matters when reducing. I've seen posts on other forums that say bead size is highly important, especially near the end. IMO, I think bead sizes average out over time. In a couple places it's written to hold until stabilized. That makes sense, but kind of assumes that reductions will destabilize the taperer. In my experience tapering Lexapro, I've had no destabilization, and in fact, no symptoms (knock on wood). Some who have symptoms move ahead with their tapers despite symptoms. I was a bit confused reading Step 3 and 4. Step 3 sounds like it says to remove beads for reduction and Step 4 sounds like counting the beads to take (which can be a painful chore to do). Again, a really nice job in writing this.😀

Thanks for your input Gaucho, I really appreciate it. From what I understand, if there are different sized beads it's good have a mixture of all of them, but things can get a bit tricky toward the end. I'll probably add some more information about this. There is so much to consider when tapering!
