I can’t get off

March 5, 2026··
Hi all Im having massive troubles with getting off seroquel. I’ve been on it for a year. I’m stuck at around 60mg per night coming off of 75mg. Everytime I go lower to 50mg, I don’t end up falling asleep and lay there for hours and panic and eventually take the rest. I have bad sleep anxiety

Jess, sorry about this. I can’t see much information in MH book or through other sources I have. Assume yours is a single tablet? You might need to explore liquid tapering to get the 10% or less reductions. Somehow trying 55mg would be next step once your current symptoms stabilise. Other option would be a compound pharmacist? I don’t know much about seroquel

Hi Jess! Have you tried to take a smaller step from 60?

Hi @JessHW9, I'm so sorry you feel like you're hitting a brick wall. If you went from 75 mg to 60 mg, that was a 20% reduction, so it could have been too large of a drop. How are you doing now? For some reason I missed your earlier post. We're here to help you in any way we can. ❤️

Venlafaxine (tapering) - Current dose 17.92 mg
Trazodone - 50 mg
Levothyroxine - 25 mcg

You could try supplements that help with sleep - ashwagandha, magnesium, tart cherry etc. Lots of natural sleep aids that truly help out there. Also if you try doing the no screens an hr or so before bed thing - it truly helps. Reading a physical book before bed instead of looking at your phone is great to wind down. Also things like exercise can help you have a better night's sleep. Also you can try ear plugs. I use Loop earplugs and they help with staying asleep longer. Binaural beats/audio before bed may have a very calming affect for you as well. Chamomile tea , any type of sleepy time tea is a good idea before bed as well. I have found even showering before bed can make things more relaxing. Look up ways to calm your nervous system and try anything you find!

These are some really helpful suggestions! It might be wise to be a bit cautious with Ashwagandha since it's a very powerful herb that could have unexpected effects on a sensitive nervous system. As with anything, it's always best to try a tiny amount first to see how we react. @JessHW9, how have you been doing lately with your sleep?

I'm still on a fairly high dose of Seroquel, although I am tapering down over the last few months for the first time in a long time. I've in the past many years ago got down as low as 150mg a day, but from my experience and also from speaking to a lot of other people over the years, the lowest doses are normally the hardest as they have a large impact on sleep ability and sleep quality. If you feel comfortable sharing, how are you tapering at the moment? Is the medication being prepared from retail tablets or compounded? If you can and aren't already, I would discuss with your doctor about any options for really small monthly reductions, likely via compounding, even if its just 1mg at a time until you get to 50mg, and possibly even further beyond that to 25mg, while taking 25mg and below even slower. I'm unsure if liquid taper of Seroquel is possible, maybe some other people on here could advise, if cost is an issue I believe the liquid preparation can sometimes be more flexible in that regard. I know for me when it comes time to go below 150mg, I'm going to need to make it extremely slow, as I get what I feel may be the same symptoms to you in regards to sleep at those lower doses.

Hi Jess: I am also getting off quetiapine and have a question. As far as I know the smallest dose of quetiapine is 25 mg immediate release. How are you taking 60 mg per night? It is IR or XR? What combination adds up to 60 mg? Can you be specific about what dose you are on, please? Aside from my questions, I have a suggestion. Breath work. It gives me a reliable, effective, and free method of managing my stress and maintaining my composure, even when things get rough. It's easy and works. I hope this helps, and I hope to hear more about your journey.
