Getting off Prozac and Wellbutrin

March 17, 2026··
Here’s a clean, well-flowing version that keeps all your key points and questions while making it easier to read: --- Hi everyone, I’m looking for insight from others who have experience tapering long-term antidepressants. I’ve been on Prozac since 2004 and Wellbutrin XL since 2014. At the time treatment started, my TSH was undetectable and my symptoms were thought to be secondary to thyroid issues (I had I-131 treatment in 2005 following hyperthyroidism). Back then, my only symptom was occasionally withdrawing and not wanting to leave my room for a few days while in college. In 2019, I asked about tapering but was told I would likely need to stay on these medications long term, without much explanation. Not understanding the risks, I abruptly stopped Prozac, Wellbutrin, and Adderall. This led to severe symptoms, which resolved after reinstating Prozac and Wellbutrin. From 2019 to 2025, I was stable on Prozac 40 mg and Wellbutrin XL 450 mg. Despite being considered “stable,” I experienced emotional numbing, irritability, rage, and personality changes that didn’t feel like me. That’s what led me to want to come off these medications. In January 2025, under my psychiatrist’s guidance, I began tapering using a linear approach, which I now believe was too aggressive. Over about 8 months, I reduced Prozac from 40 mg to 10 mg and Wellbutrin XL from 450 mg to 150 mg. Initially, this was manageable. Symptoms began when I was advised to take Prozac every other day and alter the Wellbutrin XL dose. At that point, I developed panic and intrusive looping thoughts. I made several dose adjustments trying to stabilize, not realizing my nervous system had become sensitized, and that additional medications and supplements may have contributed. I’ve now stopped all supplements and have been holding Prozac 10 mg for a little over 4 months and Wellbutrin XL 150 mg for a little over 5 months. I still experience brief waves of intrusive looping thoughts every few days, but overall I am gradually improving. These thoughts feel like intrusive, unwanted “harm-type” or suicidal-themed loops, along with a constant sense of scanning my environment for danger. I don’t agree with the thoughts and don’t want to act on them—they feel more like a misfiring alarm system—but they are very exhausting. At times I feel overwhelmed and burned out, but I do want to live. This has been going on for about 8 months to varying degrees and has been the most difficult symptom for me. I have a few key questions: * Could this be considered protracted withdrawal, and/or did I potentially sensitize/kindle my system by increasing and decreasing doses multiple times? * Do these kinds of intrusive looping thoughts typically resolve with continued holding, or only once tapering progresses? * Do I need to wait for this symptom to fully resolve, or is it reasonable to begin tapering once things feel more stable/manageable? * In your experience, are these types of intrusive thoughts considered the same as typical depressive symptoms, or something more specific to withdrawal? In terms of next steps, I’m unsure how to proceed safely. I’m still on commercially available doses and want to avoid destabilizing again—stability is my top priority. I’m also unsure which medication would be safer to taper first—Prozac or Wellbutrin. My taper coach has suggested that, since I haven’t lost control, I could begin a gradual hyperbolic taper, possibly even tapering both medications together (since one is more activating and the other more calming). The idea would be a very slow daily micro taper, starting with one and then introducing the other. However, I’ve also read that it’s best to taper one medication at a time, and I’ve seen some mention that microtapers can “catch up” with you over time—so I’m unsure what approach is safest. If anyone has experience with: * tapering Prozac vs. Wellbutrin first * micro tapering vs. cut-and-hold * tapering one vs. two medications together * or dealing with intrusive looping thoughts during withdrawal I would really appreciate your insight. Also, if you have any recommended books, podcasts, YouTube channels, or resources that helped you through this process, I would love to hear those as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond 🤍

Current medications: Fluoxetine 10 mg, Wellbutrin XL 150 mg, Tirosint 88 Mcg, Cytomel 15 mg, Metformin 500 mg Bid

01 Jan 2025 Prozac 40mg; Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Feb 2025 Prozac 30mg (-25%); Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Mar 2025 Prozac 20mg(-33%); Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Apr 2025 Prozac 20mg; Wellbutrin XL 300mg (-33%)
01 May 2025 Prozac 20mg; Wellbutrin XL 150mg (-50%)
15 Jun 2025 Prozac 10mg(-50%); Wellbutrin XL 150mg

01 Aug 2025 Prozac 10mg every other day; Wellbutrin ~75mg (splitting XL 150mg)

22 Aug 2025 Panic attack and intrusive thoughts → took Xanax 0.25mg once; psychiatrist advised reinstating Prozac 10mg daily and Wellbutrin XL 150mg. Within a few days I felt somewhat better.

Between 22 Aug 2025 and 14 Nov 2025: a handful of times (exact dates unclear) during panic episodes, I took an extra Prozac 20mg and Xanax 0.25mg. Last Xanax dose: 1/4 of 0.25mg tablet on 10 Jan 2026.

I was also taking supplements and Ozempic (last dose: 06 Nov 2025), which I believe contributed to my destabilization despite previously tolerating them. I had not yet found the withdrawal communities and continued to experience panic and intrusive thoughts, so my psychiatrist advised dose increases:

01 Oct 2025 Wellbutrin XL 300mg (+100%) (brief increase; caused palpitations → reduced)
21 Oct 2025 Wellbutrin XL 150mg (-50%)resumed and held
01 Nov 2025 Prozac 15mg (+50%) (brief increase; worsened palpitations/SI → reduced)
14 Nov 2025 Prozac 10mg (-33%)resumed and held

Since 21 Oct 2025: holding Wellbutrin XL 150mg
Since 14 Nov 2025: holding Prozac 10mg

After this point, I focused on eliminating other medications and supplements, which is also when I found the withdrawal communities.

Recent drugs and supplements taken in the last 12-24 months are: Fluoxetine 40 mg, Wellbutrin XL 450 mg, Tirosint 112 Mcg, Cytomel 25 mg, Zepbound 2.5 (last and only dose was 10/1/25), Ozempic (last dose was 11/6, stopped bc made intrusive thoughts way worst), xanax 0.25 (only used total of 6 in my life, occasionally when panic was at its worst; last dose 1/4 tablet of 0.25 mg on 1/10/2026), Omega 3, Vitamin D, Magnesium citrate, Vitamin C, naltrexone, pyloguard, probiotic, GI synergy, pancreatic enzymes, iron, L-threanine, testosterone cream, Hunger powder, Calocurb, Ovasitol, magnesium glycinate, progesterone, Paxlovid

A history of drugs taken 24 months ago and beyond: - Fluoxetine 40 mg (2003-2009), Fluoxetine 80 mg (2009-2019), Fluoxetine 40 mg (2019-2025), Wellbutrin XL 450 (2013-2025), Synthroid 88 Mcg (2005-2010), Synthroid 112 (2011-2025), Cytomel 25 (2019-2025)

Hi @Healthyagain! Welcome to Taper Community. We will do our best to help and support you. ❤️ What you're describing is consistent with withdrawal and nervous system sensitization. The pattern you described—doing relatively okay during gradual reductions, then developing significant symptoms after alternate-day dosing and dose changes—is very typical. Alternating doses (especially with medications like Prozac and Wellbutrin XL) can create fluctuating blood levels, which the nervous system often reacts to. The worsening after multiple dose adjustments can absolutely reflect sensitization (sometimes called kindling). This doesn’t mean damage—it means your nervous system has become more reactive and needs more consistency and time to settle. The intrusive looping thoughts you're experiencing are a well-known withdrawal symptom and is consistent with a sensitized nervous system misfiring, not a reflection of your true thoughts or desires. You already have the document that I gave you in your PM. These symptoms do typically improve with holding. Many people find that intrusive thoughts gradually lessen as the nervous system stabilizes at a steady dose. The fact that you’re already seeing improvement is a very good sign. 👍 For most people, this type of symptom does not require complete resolution before tapering, but it does require a solid baseline of stability. This would mean that it's something that you're able to manage and it stays pretty much status quo. When dealing with multiple drugs, my understanding that it’s usually safest to taper one medication at a time. Even though one medication may feel “activating” and the other “calming,” your brain has adapted to both. Changing two variables at once makes it much harder to tell what’s causing symptoms and increases risk of destabilization. Usually it's best to taper one medication first and to go very slowly, especially since you're sensitized. Regarding which drug to taper first .... some things to keep in mind are that Prozac (fluoxetine) has a long half-life, which can make it feel easier—but it still affects serotonin strongly, and withdrawal can absolutely happen (as you’ve experienced). Wellbutrin (bupropion) is more stimulating and can contribute to anxiety, panic, and looping thoughts in some people. In cases like yours, some people choose to taper the more activating medication first (often Wellbutrin), especially if symptoms include anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts. The most important factor is having some idea of which medication you feel is contributing more to your current symptoms. Regarding whether to microtaper or cut-and-hold .... both can work, but after sensitization cut-and-hold is often more predictable. Microtapering can work, but you have to go extremely slowly, and yes—it can catch up with you if the cumulative reductions become too much. If microtapering is used, it should be done with very small reductions. You'd want to pay close attention to your body and hold when necessary if symptoms increase. Based on what you described, a suggested cautious approach could be to continue holding until things feel consistently manageable and then start with very small reductions (much smaller than before). What you’re experiencing—especially the intrusive looping thoughts—is something many people recover from as the nervous system settles. It's good that you recognize the thoughts as not “you,” you don’t want to act on them, and you’re already seeing gradual improvement. Those are all very positive signs! You’re doing the right thing by slowing down and asking these great questions. I'm sure other members will chime in when they can. @Based Psychiatrist, what are your thoughts regarding anything mentioned in my reply? Again, we're glad you're here! ❤️ Disclaimer: These are merely suggestions based on personal experience from being in the withdrawal community. It's not medical advice.

Hi Healthyagain! Thanks for joining us and sharing your questions. You mentioned youre working with a taper coach, do you have a licensed clinician youre working with? Finding one in your area could be a big help. The pattern youre in is unfortunately common and can still be resolved with the proper attention and care.

Hi, thank you so much for your response — I really appreciate it. And thank you, Catina, as always for being a beacon of light and such a great support. I do have a clinician, but he’s fairly old-fashioned and has had difficulty even with things like prescribing compounded medications. I do like him and would prefer not to change, but I’m open to doing what’s best for my wellbeing. At one point he suggested adding another medication (Rexulti), which I declined. These intrusive thoughts began during tapering and destabilization, not before. I never experienced anything like this prior to medication changes, which makes it difficult for me to see it as a return of baseline depression. Just for additional context — I was first put on Prozac around 2003–2004 after moving across continents by myself for college due to homesickness and some isolation. About a year later, I underwent radioactive iodine treatment, which eliminated my thyroid function and required lifelong hormone replacement. Years later, around 2013–2014, Wellbutrin XL was added for low energy and loss of sex drive. Since then, my thyroid medications have been adjusted over time, with TSH remaining suppressed likely due to dosing. Given all of this, I’m trying to understand how a clinician can best support me when my goal is to taper off medications rather than add more. If you have any insight on that, I would really appreciate it. Also, since I’m in Nassau County, New York, do you happen to know of any taper-friendly psychiatrists in this area? I’m open to exploring additional support if needed. Thank you again for your help — it really means a lot.
